9/5/2023 0 Comments Altium designer ubuntu![]() ![]() The biggest crap factor are the Xilinx tools. And I'm saying that as an experienced programmer. For someone having gotten used to Ubuntu and the software it brings through straight installs, getting a minimal "Hello World" out of this board is proving to be extremely challenging for a newbie. Your mind will dazzle from all the license files, registrations, threats about non-compliance with export restrictions and whatever else these companies come up with to make your life difficult. Unfortunately, where this technology is really amazing, getting things to work on your computer is not so. It's very promising with a TFT touchscreen display, RS485, RS232, 3x USB 2.0, S/PDIF in-out, SD-card reader, headphones/line-in/line-out, 4-ch DAC, 4-ch ADC, 4x relays, PWM, SVGA output, MIDI and a TSK-3000A RISC 32-bit processor. Versions higher however are rated garbage and based on my experience trying to make it work I highly recommend not wasting your time on that.I've managed to get my hands on a really cool FPGA board from Altium. AD17 is rated gold on WINEHQ, so I think there is a good possibility to get it to work of you'd like to use it. ![]() I've played around with wine too but never managed to get it working, I've heard someone having some success with running AD17, but I find that version to be a bit to old and honestly ugly as fuck so I have not tried it myself. If you are new to Linux look into Manjaro (that way you can use the archwiki too which is a great resource), it is very user friendly distro. Here is a comprehensive guide for setting it up on an arch based system, but choose a guide for the distro you'd like to run. ![]() It does take some effort to set it up, and you need the hardware capabilities (VTd & VTx for Intel processors and IOMMU or similar for the motherboard, most newer AMD and Xeon processors got that, as for GPU it can be achieved with both AMD and Nvidia cars although it is a bit more steps with Nvidia cards), but once it is set up properly you'll have it running with no issues at all. I suggest looking into running it in a windows VM with GPU passthrough. ![]()
